A Simple Guide To Understanding Mass Flow Sensors

A mass flow sensor is an instrument that can measure the rate of flow of a liquid or gas. When users have a substance to measure, they may need to use this device to get an accurate measurement.  Here is a brief guide for users to know the basic information about mass flow sensors.

What is a Mass Flow Sensor?

A mass flow sensor is a device that is used to measure the mass flow rate of a fluid. This sensor can be used in industries such as chemical, oil and gas, food and beverage, and water treatment. The sensor uses a sensing element that detects the change in pressure caused by the flow of the fluid. By tracking this change, the sensor can determine the mass flow rate of the fluid.

What are the types of Mass Flow Sensors From Saftty?

  1. Differential pressure flow sensor: Take the ADP2000 differential pressure sensor as an example. The ADP2000 sensor is a digital differential pressure sensor, and its internal thermal sensor element measures the differential pressure of the gas flowing through it. This sensor can achieve drift-free, high-precision measurements of differential pressure between air, nitrogen, and oxygen. Its differential pressure range is -125~+125Pa, and it also has excellent accuracy at low differential pressure, with high reliability and long-term stability.
  2. AMC2000 Gas Mass Flow Controller: It is a device for precise measurement and control of gas mass flow. The sensor adopts the self-developed MEMS mass flow chip, which is accurate and stable and has the characteristics of high and low-temperature resistance, good linearity, and fast response time.

How does it work?

Different types of flow sensors have different working principles. Three are listed below:

  1. Differential pressure flow sensor: It has a long production history and is widely used. The production has been standardized and there are many types. Such as the orifice plate, sonic nozzle, uniform velocity tube, and other flow sensors. The working principle of the differential pressure flow sensor is to use when the fluid flows through the throttling part built in the pipeline, a pressure difference value related to the flow rate will appear before and after it, and the flow rate value can be obtained by measuring the pressure difference value. Its characteristics are that the throttling parts have high machining precision and strict installation requirements. There must be long enough straight pipes before and after it to ensure the stability of the fluid flow. Saftty has several flow sensors of this type.
  2. Mass flow sensor: Mass flow sensor is widely used, and both liquid and gas measurements can be applied. This sensor uses the principles of fluid mechanics to establish a functional relationship between fluid mass flow and fluid force. It is mainly suitable for liquid measurement. For gas measurement, it is required to be under high pressure to ensure that the mass flow is within the measurement range. It is suitable for measurement under the condition that the diameter of the pipeline is less than 200mm.

Conclusion

The mass flow sensor is a precise device that can be used to monitor the mass and flow of liquid or gas and is widely used in various professional fields. By reading this guide, users can learn more about the knowledge and application of mass flow sensors with the example of Saftty.
